Find your lost iPhone

Apple's free Find My shows where your iPhone is, makes it ring and locks it. You can use it from any browser.

Find your iPhone from any browser

  1. Go to icloud.com/find on a computer or another phone.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account used on the lost iPhone. If it asks for a code and you can't get it, look for the Find Devices option on the sign-in screen, which lets you continue without one.
  3. Choose your iPhone in the device list. Its location appears on the map.

On another Apple device, the Find My app works the same way. On a friend's iPhone, open Find My, tap Me, then Help a Friend, and sign in.

If it's somewhere nearby

Choose Play Sound. The iPhone plays a sound even when it's on silent, as long as it still has some battery. If you have an iPhone 15 or newer and you're close, the Find My app on another iPhone can also guide you with direction arrows.

If you can't get it back right away

  1. Choose Mark As Lost. The iPhone locks with your passcode and shows your message and phone number on the screen.
  2. Apple Pay cards on the phone are suspended while it's in Lost Mode.
  3. Keep watching the map. The iPhone keeps sending its location.

Don't remove the iPhone from your account. As long as it's on your Apple Account, Activation Lock stops anyone else from setting it up and using it.

If it's switched off or the battery died

An iPhone 11 or later (not iPhone SE) running iOS 15 or later joins Apple's Find My network even when off. Nearby Apple devices relay its position anonymously.

SituationHow long it stays findable
Switched off by someoneAbout 24 hours
Battery ran outAbout 5 hours (Power Reserve, iOS 15.2 and later)
After thatLast known location, shown for up to 7 days

This only works if Find My, the Find My network and Send Last Location were turned on beforehand. You can check by pressing and holding the side button: it should say iPhone Findable After Power Off.

If it was stolen

  1. Mark it as lost right away (see above).
  2. Call your carrier to block the SIM and report the phone.
  3. File a police report with the IMEI number. You'll find it at account.apple.com under Devices.
  4. Change your Apple Account password and the passwords of important apps.
  5. Only erase it (Erase This Device) if you're sure it won't come back. After erasing, you can no longer see its location.

Don't go to the location yourself. Give it to the police. Also, beware of texts or emails saying "your iPhone was found" with a link. Thieves send these to steal your Apple password.

For next time, turn on Stolen Device Protection in Settings › Face ID & Passcode. It stops a thief from changing your important settings with just your passcode.
